Maginot, André
(1877-1932)
   political figure
   Born in Paris, André Maginot was a deputy for the democratic Left (1910), and served several times as a minister after World War I, during the course of which he was gravely wounded. He put through the law (January 4, 1930) ordering the construction of fortifications on the northeast corner of France. The Maginot Line, the plan for which had already been formulated by paul painlevé, did not continue, however, along the French-Belgian border because of opposition from Belgium. Moreover, not adaptable to the new form of mobile warfare, the Maginot Line did not play its anticipated role in World War ii, which was a war of movement, making the defensive line obsolete.
